Cuttlefish casting is an ancient metal casting technique where molten metal is poured into a mold carved into a piece of cuttlebone, creating unique, textured jewelry pieces with an organic feel.
Explore this exciting technique in our hands-on class with jeweler Bruce Lane.
Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation, Bruce feels fortunate to have been deeply immersed in Navajo culture and art. His mother is from Shiprock, New Mexico, and his father from Coppermine, Arizona. He began his jewelry journey by making earrings and bracelets for his mother and late sister. After years of guiding fly fishermen on the San Juan River, he started creating tufa cast pieces inspired by his fishing experiences. Though drawn to the simple beauty of cuttlebone casting, Bruce is always experimenting with new techniques in the studio. When not making jewelry, he helps run and teach traditional Navajo farming on his parents' nonprofit educational farm.
In this class you'll learn how to carve into natural cuttlebone to create one-of-a-kind pieces with beautiful organic textures. Perfect for beginners and experienced makers alike, this workshop covers the entire process—from design to pour to polishing—using traditional techniques in a supportive, creative studio setting.
