Technique Focus: Introduction to Sand Casting

  • Meltdown Studio 901 Rio Grande Boulevard Northwest Suite E-130 Albuquerque, NM, 87104 United States (map)

Sand Casting is a casting process where molten metal is poured into a mold made of sand.  This technique is great to use because of its cost effectiveness and the availability of raw materials.

In this hands-on workshop, learn all the techniques and tricks to sand casting, from incorporating a model, to pouring your metal, so you can produce beautiful pieces with very little setup.

Sand casting is a great way to utilize scrap metal, melting down what you can no longer use, and turning it into something remarkable.  And the best part: immediate results!

Students will have the opportunity to cast multiple pieces in pewter to become comfortable with the process and will also cast in sterling silver.

Our Instructor Gary Hutchinson, author of the book “Sand Casting Jewelry,” has had a 37 year teaching career in Industrial Education and continues to teach workshops throughout New Mexico and California. His passion for teaching, love of tools, and vast experience as an artist make his classes truly inspiring and illuminating.
