Granulation is an ancient metalsmithing technique of fusing tiny spheres, wires and chips of gold and silver to create intricate patterns and designs. The technique dates back at least 5000 years. Examples have been discovered that suggest Sumerian goldsmiths were experimenting with the technique but it was not until it reached the Etruscan society in the 8th century BC that the technique was perfected and widely used.
In this five hour hands-on class you will learn:
- How to make “consistent” sized granules
- How to prepare metal for granulation
- How to fuse the granules into simple patterns
This class will cover granulation with fine silver, but can also be used with alloys. Students will walk away from this class with a firm understanding of the techniques as well as wonderful samples made in class.
